“NYC lost one of its best trainers when Angel left for Florida. It’s rare that I’ve taken a group fitness class that pushed me to the point of exhaustion, and yet Angel’s Purgatory Boot Camp did it every time. He’s tough and expects a lot out of you (he gives you fair warning that this is BOOT CAMP at the beginning of each class), but he’s also quick with a smile or to fix your form. You’ll be addicted once you take his class. I certainly was!
Miss your class!”

“Although I was an Equinox member since last August, I only actually started to use my membership in April of this year. Even though I have belonged to different gyms for years, I never seemed to be able to really get into classes. I started taking different classes at different locations and through a friend I met at the gym I had asked what classes/instructors he recommended. Without hesitation he said you would really enjoy PBC aka Purgatory BootCamp, but told me it wasn’t for the faint of the heart. He also said that I would either love or hate Angel. Never one to back down to a challenge, I decided one Tuesday to get out of work on time and go see what this was all about. Part of my decision was also based on the fact that Angel would be leaving NYC in a few weeks. I decided to friend request Angel on Facebook because that seems to be my modus operandi when trying instructors for the first time. Note to self, when Angel asks if you are new and you already kind of know what the class is about don’t raise your hand. My first fear was the fact that you weren’t able to keep your water bottle near you. I have been accustomed to always just reaching down for water. It’s probably more out of force of habit then necessity. Also that the entire class is based on you using your own body weight.
Angel gives clear instructions on what he expects out of you. I like the fact that it’s not about quantity but rather quality. He would rather you do one good pushup then a bunch of substandard ones. Angel makes sure that he covers the entire room during the 45 minutes; to not only correct you but also to give you words of encouragement. In the three weeks leading up to his departure, I made sure that his classes were on my schedule. I was also fortunate enough to make it there three times in his last week. Although I won’t be getting to Florida that often, if/when I do I will definitely be making it to Angel’s classes. He was able to push me to my limits as well as me earning the right to be sore. NYC and I definitely miss Angel a lot.”

“I discovered Angel Alicea by accident. I can’t afford a personal trainer and I hate working out, but I try to stay in shape so I take a lot of fitness classes my gym offers. One Sunday afternoon, about four years ago, I was at my local gym and getting ready to take a class. The regular teacher was not there, and the sub was Angel Alicea. The intensity, enthusiasm and work ethic of Angel blew me away. The class I normally took was knocked upside-down. I was so happy with my workout, I sought out any classes taught by Angel. Sometimes, I would take three classes in a day that Angel taught.

Being a regular in Angel’s classes never meant that he would cut me any slack. I actually got kicked out of his BootCamp class once: my chest hadn’t touched the ground during a push up …something Angel insists on. Angel always wants you to do your best. That desire for perfection can rub some people the wrong way. In my opinion, anybody who misinterprets Angel’s intensity is an idiot. Angel wants you to reach your goals.

I’ve gotten to know Angel outside of the gym and have found him to be a complete gentleman. If you are near a facility where Angel Alicea is teaching, I would highly recommend challenging yourself to train with him. Coming from a very lazy person, I can assure you that your body and mind will thank you for participating in one of Mr. Alicea’s classes. HELL YA!”

“I first met Angel at Equinox where I was looking for some High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) to supplement much of the work I was doing on my own and he introduced me to Tabata in 2010. It was unbelievably intense, running the class with a tempo and energy unlike anything I had ever encountered in the years of athletics and martial arts training. I was instantly sold after taking his class and I took every opportunity to participate in every class he led, whether it was Tabata, Kettlebells, or Boxing. That intensity was always balanced with a well versed knowledge of movement and technique. He was one of the very few trainers I had met at Equinox that would take the time out at the beginning of each class to check the participants range of motion as well as instruct everyone in the proper technique of all movements covered, run through a proper warm up as well as a cool down. His approach was consistent no matter what class he was teaching. It wasn’t long before my conditioning was at a point where I would accept no substitute. Over the years, I dropped into the same classes taught by other trainers and there just was no comparison. No offense to them, but I would walk out from boredom. Then, just when I thought the intensity level could not get any higher, he introduced everyone to Purgatory Bootcamp, which is at a level which cannot be explained – it must be experienced first hand. He demands complete focus, commitment, and intensity in his classes because that’s what he brings to each class but you owe it to yourself if you want to see the results.”
